Bud laid his palm against the Impalaâs horn. That kid better not keep him waiting. Just because he took her out for a drink the night before didnât mean heâd gone soft or suddenly turned into her good buddy.
But boy, she sure showed him last night. Heâd thought he was playing a smart trick on her, telling her to break into that apartment without any idea what she was doing. He figured his ploy would give him thirty minutesâ peace and a chance to eat dinner on the clock. Instead, turned out the pup was more skilled than heâd given her credit for. He wasnât about to tell her, but he was fairly impressed. Whoâd have known the country bumpkin was a fucking gymnast?
After that, heâd figured he owed the kid a beer. He wouldâve treated Yoshi to a cold one, too, if sheâd been interested. Not that he could see the Japanese princess swilling beer with him in some dive bar. Not her cup of tea. Instead sheâd insisted that she had the perfect job for him; he could watch a bunch of DVDs theyâd found at Conantâs place. Yoshi thought they might reveal something critical that would break open the case. Like there was a case. No one was pretending the vic didnât go over the bridge. And it seemed obvious that if the Conant guy took a header off the Golden Gate, then he meant to do it.
Watching those movies was probably some kind of ruse to get him to voluntarily expose himself to four hours of queer propaganda. Joke was on him. He was happy to have something he could do while sitting on his ass. âCourse, she hadnât warned him it was all gay shit. Probably knew he wouldnât have done the job if she had. Heâd parked himself in front of the TV with a six-pack and a remote control. That was the only way heâd gotten through themâwatching them on 6x. Bunch of disturbing queer flicks.
âMorning.â Tucker slid in on the bench seat.
He watched her carefully out of the side of his eye, all but daring her to mention the black canvas bag that hung over the back of the seat between them. It had a large section for files, and big pockets on the sides where he stored his cameras and snacks. There was the slightest upturn of her lips, the same twitch heâd seen the last time sheâd ridden with him. He knew what the brat was thinking. But they had an unspoken agreement. So long as she kept her trap shut about the bag, he didnât have to throw it out the window and drive back and forth over it for good measure.
Heâd been a surprised when Tucker gave it to him for his birthday a couple of months ago. Sheâd only been working at Blind Eye a few weeks and he hadnât been nice to her once. Heâd decided the kid had serious daddy issues. He wasnât about to accept that role, especially not for some needy little daddyâs girl.
